For years, RFID has been used to control access to buildings and secure perimeters. Many commercial off-the-shelf products in this area exist, including some novel products that add biometrics to a standard RFID tag reader.

RFID solutions for access control have the obvious advantage over their predecessor, magnetic-stripe cards, of being faster and easier to use, since physical contact is not necessary.

Both passive (e.g. ISO 14443 and 15693) and active tags are used for access control. The passive ones would typically require a user to bring the tag near to the reader, while active tags can be affixed to vehicles to allow for completely hands-free access control.
